Over 20 years helping Kiwi businesses get more out of their technology.
We build custom software, handle hosting, and connect systems — so you can stop wrestling with tech and get on with running your business.
Primal Media has been around since 2003, which means we've seen a lot of trends come and go. What hasn't changed is the reason we started: helping New Zealand businesses use technology in ways that actually make a difference day-to-day.
Based in Mangere East, Auckland, we work with businesses across the country on everything from custom web applications and EDI integrations through to email hosting and ecommerce. We're not a big agency with layers of account managers — you deal directly with the people doing the work.
What we do well
We're not trying to be everything to everyone. These are the things we've been doing for a long time and do properly.
Custom web applications
PHP-based systems built around your workflow — not a generic template stretched to fit.
Software integrations
We connect platforms that weren't designed to talk to each other — EDI, REST APIs, webhooks, email parsing.
Hosting & email
We run our own infrastructure, so when something goes wrong you're not waiting on a help desk in another country.
Ecommerce systems
WooCommerce and Stripe setups with the custom bits that make your store work for your specific business.
A bit of history
We've been at this a while. Here's roughly how we got to where we are.
Primal Media is founded
Started in Auckland with support from the Work and Income Enterprise Allowance scheme. Early work was websites and small web apps for local businesses.
Expanding into integrations
Clients started asking for more than just websites — connecting their systems, automating order processing, parsing EDI files. That became a core part of what we do.
Own hosting infrastructure
We built out our own hosting and email infrastructure so clients could have a single provider for development and ongoing operations.
Still doing it from Auckland
More than two decades in, still based in Mangere East, still working directly with Kiwi businesses. The tools have changed; the approach hasn't.
